History
Jan Winemiller believes in the adage “Bloom where you’re planted.” And her
roots go back very far indeed in the place where she founded Tingley Glass. The
studio is built on the shores of Tingley Lake, named for her ancestors, and is
located just a stone’s throw from the old homestead on which her grandmother
was born, her mother grew up, and where Jan herself spent the earliest years of
her childhood. She returned often for visits to the family until she had the
opportunity to take over the farm and restore it. The area around Harford,
Pennsylvania has always felt like home to her.

And well it should—Jan's ancestors were among the original Nine Partners that
came from Attleborough, Massachusetts in 1790 to settle the area that became
Harford. The Tingleys were not far behind. Descended from Palmer Tingley,
who sailed from England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635, Jan’s
ancestor, Elkanah Tingley, fought in the Revolutionary War before moving to
Harford with his brothers around 1820. The Tingleys prospered, becoming the
largest documented family group in the U.S. Family records were compiled for
more than a century by Henry Tingley, Raymon Meyers Tingley and Marian
McCauley Frye, resulting in a meticulous documentation published in 1970. The
Tingleys take great pride and enjoyment in their family, getting together often
for reunions, including the annual party at Tingley Lake.
